As Legal Counsel - Strategic Partnerships you will have the opportunity to support the Booking.com Partnerships department. This department is driving a significant share of Booking.com’s overall business and is responsible for all of demand facing B2B relationships at B.com with full accountability for the demand facing B2B platform and suite of products, business development and account management, and B2B marketing. The team builds and distributes B2B products that power travel booking experiences for many partners, from airlines to banks to e-commerce platforms. Examples include American Airlines, Grab, Amazon and Citibank. The travel distribution industry is undergoing significant changes, and the department is currently laying the foundations for growth and scale in the coming years.

The Partnerships team consists of 300+ colleagues, in more than 20 offices. The business is truly global in nature, continuing to grow very fast, and represents a meaningful portion of the overall revenue. As Legal Counsel - Strategic Partnerships you will be the leading lawyer supporting this Strategic Partnership team, serving as a Business Partner to help the team in delivering on its Strategic Priorities, and ensuring compliance with laws and policies.

B.Responsible:

  • Provide leadership and guidance to Strategic Partnership leadership team on a full range of legal issues, including commercial contracts, disputes, competition law, IP law, consumer law regulatory (in coordination with the other experts in the Legal department), to ensure the activities, policies, business practices and transactions comply with all relevant laws and regulations;
  • Serve as a business partner to the Strategic Partnership team helping the team to deliver on its Strategic Priorities and grow the business in a sustainable way;
  • Draft and negotiate complex global deals with Booking’s strategic partnerships which includes a variety of industries (e.g. airlines, rental car companies, other OTAs to name a few);
  • Coordinate with regional counsels on Strategic Partnership deals and any potential local regulatory matters that may arise when structuring new partnerships;
  • Serve as single point of contact within the Legal team to ensure that Legal and Public Affairs priorities of all subareas of Legal (e.g. Privacy, Competition, Consumer Law) are being rolled out in the Strategic Partnership team;
  • Train the Strategic Partnership team on a variety of legal matters and work with the Strategic Partnership leadership team to improve risk management and controls;
  • Analyse precedents/case law, and proposed and existing laws and regulations that may impact the Strategic Partnership business (such as Platform 2 Business or other e-commerce regulations) and its growth, and work on implementing any requirements coming from such regulations;
  • Manage external counsel where needed and constantly look for opportunities to improve ways of working/process/controls (eg contract management matters).

B.Skilled:

  • 5-8 years, experience in negotiating international commercial deals/contracts, within a similar position;
  • Airline, OTA, Travel, Rental Car industry experience is a big advantage;
  • A confident self-starter with strong interpersonal and organisational skills;
  • The ability to effectively and proactively provide sound legal advice, exercise good business judgment;
  • The ability to work with senior management in order to implement policies and processes on a cross-functional basis;
  • Openness and flexibility to thrive in a fast paced environment;
  • Demonstrated ability to independently lead a commercial contract from inception to closure, including:
    • whole-cloth drafting of custom agreements relating to new business initiatives;
    • navigating strategic contracts through the company to obtain input and approval, including from senior management as applicable;
    • appropriately escalating legal and business matters.
