Role overview

We are recruiting for a qualified lawyer with either compliance experience or real interest and potential from a City or large national law firm to join our Compliance department as a Compliance Lawyer. This is a permanent full time or four days a week role.

The Compliance department is headed by the firm’s General Counsel, supported by the firm’s Head of Compliance and comprises 19 individuals. This role will report into a Senior Compliance Lawyer.

Key responsibilities

As a Compliance Lawyer you will be expected to have the responsibilities set out below (as well as others which are not listed). On occasion you may be required to work outside our normal working hours of 9.30am to 5.30pm.

  • To maintain expertise in SRA/other relevant regulation affecting the firm’s business, forming contacts and networking with regulators, representative bodies and peers in other law firms as appropriate;
  • To keep developments in the compliance field under review and proactively to suggest how the firm’s compliance-related policies and procedures might be improved, and to lead/support projects designed to bring such improvements about;
  • To assist in devising and maintaining the firm’s policies and procedures, and to develop its standard forms, on all core compliance issues – including the regulatory aspects of matters such as: anti-money laundering; sanctions; other aspects of business acceptance risk; conflicts; confidentiality; insider lists; dealing rules; ethical walls; anti-bribery and corruption;
  • To deal with everyday queries from fee earners/Business Services staff on all core compliance topics;
  • To help partners (and other fee earners) to review clients’ terms and conditions of business and to draft engagement letter (and/or to supervise other Compliance lawyers reviewing client terms and conditions). Also, to suggest improvements to the firm’s own terms and conditions of business;
  • To assist the Compliance Officers (and their manager) with any queries they have in the course of running the firm’s business acceptance processes and clearing identification evidence etc.;
  • To support Compliance Services in conducting monitoring exercises to ensure that the firm’s compliance-related policies and procedures are operating as they should, and to identify ways in which they might be improved (and/or to supervise other lawyers conducting monitoring exercises);
  • To devise and deliver training internally (at all levels) on all core compliance issues. Also, the potential to become involved in devising and delivering external training at industry conferences or to clients;
  • To assist the Compliance team in considering the expanding number of legal issues which affect the firm’s conduct of its business. This includes, for example, reviewing commercial contracts with key suppliers and other procurement support.

Candidate profile

Candidates for this position must have:

  • A minimum of 3 years’ post qualified experience as a lawyer;
  • Excellent academic qualifications;
  • Experience of working within a compliance function or real potential;
  • Willingness to learn and understand how a law firm is managed;
  • Ability to build trusted relationships with the key stakeholders at all levels both internally and externally;
  • Excellent legal technical knowledge;
  • Ability to pick up new legal concepts quickly;
  • Ability to make independent judgements;
  • Experience of generating and collating accurate documentation;
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills;
  • The highest standards of professional ethics;
  • Excellent facilitation and presentation skills;
  • Ability to work alone or as part of a team without constant supervision;
  • Experience of working in a diverse team whilst fostering an inclusive team culture.
